Phnom Penh used to be a regular for my Thai visa runs and I've recently returned after a 3-year gap. A lot has changed with many new buildings on the island and the riverside has been cleaned up significantly. I love that town!

I visited Phnom Penh about 20 years ago and I can't remember the Gold or Silver Palaces, I'll have to check my old photos. I do remember the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, I remember the blood stains, not inside but outside on the rocks. It was brutal what happened there. That's a good tip about making sure the tuk tuk driver knows where he's going before accepting a ride. I took one at about 4 am after a night out and he had no idea where he was going! Amazing quality and detail in your pictures as always.

As always, tremendously well done, guys. Although...we're still gagging a bit over the fried spider. (Just us?) Phnom Penh - Cambodia in generally, really - is such a dichotomy. So much beauty and culture, and yet such a dark, violent history. Sometimes we think the only possible way to respond to that past is the way Phnom Penh has - with so much beauty. And you've done a great job capturing it, as you always do. Thanks so much for sharing!

Phnom-Penh comes alive in your post in brilliant colours. As always your pictures capture beautifully the essence and spirit of the place. What struck me was the uncanny resemblance of the palaces to the ones I have seen in Bangkok. The same style seems to be the signature of the region.

Love your photos, especially the ones from both of the palaces, and Wat Phnom the Buddhist temple looks just marvelous. I would love to visit Phnom Penh once, so thanks for sharing all the tips.

Your photos are gorgeous! Cambodia is a place I really want to visit. Your photos remind me of other places I have visited in South East Asia. At the same time, it hurts a bit to read after the killing fields and genocide memorials. It is a mix of emotions when you get to visit cities with a tragic past (like Krakow or Budapest or Prague). #feetdotravel

Oh, my heart just skipped a beat! That dog looks like my old beagle! It's such a discrepancy between poor and rich when you see these temples, the king's palace and chaos along the rivers and streets of Phnom Penh.

A visit of mixed emotions! Stunning castles and who doesn't love a sunset with a Long Island Iced Tea?! I have read a few posts about the Killing Fields and our friends visited in April and re-told the horrors that you see but I do think we should visit and share, in the hope it doesn't happen again (sadly, I said this in my Auschwitz blog post and Cambodia is proof that it can happen again!). Thank you for sharing your experience, warts and all! #feetdotravel
